Freeman's Quay pool closure

The swimming pool at at Freeman's Quay Leisure Centre will be temporarily closed, from May to October 2019. This page will provide information on both the likely disruption and on how the works are progressing.

Closure information

We have experienced issues with the tiles coming off the main pool wall, due to a defect in the original pool works in 2008.

This issue was first discovered in April 2017 and has caused ongoing disruption to our programme.

We have now reached an agreement that will rectify the fault, however the works require a closure period of up to five months. This will involve replacing all of the pool tiles in both the main and the small teaching pool.

Whilst the pools are closed we will also carry out some refurbishment works in the swimming pool changing and reception areas.

Both the main pool and the small teaching pools will be closed during the works and are due to re-open in Autumn 2019.

The fitness suite, dance studio and sports hall will remain open throughout the works to accommodate other users of the facility.

Progress updates

Update 4 September 2019

The new tiling in both pools is now complete, the next step is cleaning the area and removing the scaffolding which is supporting the moveable pool floors. The scaffolding is to be removed by skilled divers once the area is cleaned.

Work in the fitness studio is also complete, this includes a new floor and fresh look and feel.

Update 21 August 2019

Work is moving along well and the tiling is almost compete. Once tiling is cured, work will commence on the pool floor to apply a resin coating.

Work is well under way in the changing village, refurbishing the toilets and revitalising cubicles and lockers. Work is also progressing on the look and feel of the building including new flooring and decorating.

Update 13 August 2019

The work on the pool is now well underway with the tiling removed and rendering complete, tillers arrived on site and began to tile the pools.

Painting is also ongoing throughout the building with good progress being made. Refurbishment of pool change and reception toilets is almost complete, requiring only the finishing touches with first floor toilets areas to follow.

Around the building carpet has been removed in preparation for the new flooring. The main hall and dance studio floors will also be sanded, relined and sealed week commencing 19 August.
