Proposal to close the Sherburn Hill site of Sherburn Primary School

We are proposing to close the Sherburn Hill site of Sherburn Primary School on 31 August 2018.

Why has this been proposed?

We have a responsibility to plan school places across the county to ensure that the highest quality of education is offered to children in County Durham.

Schools need to be sustainable in the long term to meet the challenges in a rapidly changing educational environment. We carry out a review of school places each year. This can sometimes lead to proposals for reorganisation if it is felt that proposed changes would lead to better education provision for pupils in the local area that the school serves.

Sherburn Primary School has two sites, one in Sherburn Village and one in Sherburn Hill. There are a very few pupils on the Sherburn Hill site. We are proposing to close this site, so that all pupils can be taught on the same site in Sherburn Village.

Decision

At the meeting of 16 May 2018, our Cabinet in its role as decision maker agreed the proposal to close the Sherburn Hill site of Sherburn Primary School on 31 August 2018.

The reasons given for agreeing the proposal were that it will enhance education provision for the communities of Sherburn Hill and Sherburn Village, and it will prevent the school from becoming unviable from both an educational and financial perspective.
