Health and wellbeing at work

We are working to support employers and voluntary and community organisations to address health issues in the workplace.

Wellbeing training for businesses

A free training hub is available to improve mental health support for employees across County Durham.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) and voluntary and community sector (VCS) organisations can benefit from free training and support to improve workforce mental health and wellbeing, raise awareness of the importance of good mental health and reduce the stigma associated with these issues.

The hub, delivered by Hartlepool and East Durham Mind (HEDM), will offer eLearning and blended learning programmes to local business owners, managers and employees. All organisations, irrespective of sector, can benefit from the training provided.

More information is available at County Durham Training Hub.

Better Health at Work Award

In 2021/22, 36.8 million working days were lost due to work-related illness and workplace injury in Great Britain. Furthermore, 1.8 million people suffered from a work-related illness.

Work can also be a cause of stress and common mental health problems. Workplaces have a role to play in:

  • the prevention of illness and the promotion of health and wellbeing
  • early intervention for those who develop a health condition (physical or mental)
  • an improvement in the health of those out of work - so that people who have the potential to work are able to do so ensuring a healthier community and good workforce planning

The Better Health at Work Award recognises the efforts of employers in addressing health issues in the workplace. The award is free, flexible and open to all employers in County Durham regardless of size, location or type of business.
