Durham city launches Britain in Bloom bid
Green fingered volunteers are hoping for another golden year as they launch their latest Britain in Bloom bid.
To mark the launch, children from Yellow Wellies Nursery joined County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, Durham BID and campaign volunteers to carry out planting outside the Gala, with plants donated from Leamside Nurseries in Houghton-le-Spring.
Stimulating the senses
This year, the in bloom group is also linking up with the Dementia Friendly Durham City Initiative and the Alzheimer's Society to help make Durham a dementia friendly city and will see a number of flower displays which evoke memories and stimulate the senses.
In 2016, Durham City was victorious in the Champion of Champions competition and last year was judged to be the best overall entry in the regional Northumbria in Bloom contest.
Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships, said: "We have a strong history of success in this competition and are confident of another great year thanks to the fantastic volunteers who give up their time to make the city looks its best.
"We are looking forward to welcoming the judges in the autumn and wowing them with all the hard work that has been carried out."
