Call for volunteers to make Durham shine as Lumiere returns

Published May 31, 2019 11.15am

The UK's largest light festival is set to return with shining splendour this November, and organisers are calling for people to be part of it.

Festival Makers 2017

This year marks the tenth anniversary of Lumiere, the festival that sees Durham lit up with stunning art installations created by light, transforming the city into a breath-taking spectacle.

We commission the event and are working with Lumiere producers Artichoke to recruit volunteer Festival Makers.

The call coincides with Volunteers' Week, which celebrates the role people play as volunteers around the UK from Saturday 1 to Friday 7 June.

Cllr Joy Allen, Cabinet member for transformation, culture and tourism, said: "This is an exciting opportunity, not only to be part of the electrifying energy we see every Lumiere, but to gain valuable experience and be part of something truly unique.

"During Lumiere, from Thursday 14 to Sunday 17 November, our Festival Makers will play a vital role in the running of the epic event. Responsibilities include welcoming visitors to the city, directing people to the different installations and being the face of the festival."

Who can apply?

Festival Makers should be over 18 years old, have a friendly personality and a passion for Lumiere, and we are looking for people with different skills and life experiences. First time volunteers are encouraged to apply, as well as those who have helped at previous festivals.

Over 300 volunteers participated in Lumiere 2017, with numbers hoped to be even higher this year.

Victoria Lee, who volunteered at Lumiere 2017, said: "I love chatting to people, so it was a pleasure to be involved. As volunteers we worked as a team and took turns carrying out tasks.

"It's a major event for Durham and it's great to see so many people attending each time. Being able to volunteer means I have given something back to the community."
