Through traffic - how to avoid Durham City Centre


If you normally travel across Durham city without the need to stop, we recommend that you avoid this route because traffic will be slower and your journey may be delayed.

Alternative route to the east

  • Take the A167 northbound and join at A1M at J63 
  • Follow the A1M southbound until J62
  • Either continue your normal route or take the A690 towards Durham

Or

  • Take A167 southbound until Thinford roundabout 
  • At the roundabout take the first turn off onto the A688
  • Continue on the A688 until J61 
  • Join the A1M northbound until J62
  • From J62 follow your normal route or take the A690 towards Durham

Alternative route to the west

  • Take the A1M northbound 
  • At J63 follow the A167 southbound 
  • At Cock o the North roundabout either continue your normal route or take the A177 towards Durham

Or

  • Take the A688 or A1M to J61 
  • At J61 take the A688 until Thinford roundabout
  • From Thinford roundabout take the A167 northbound
  • At Cock o the North roundabout either continue your normal route or take the A177 towards Durham
