Coming Home

This exhibition explores the various circumstances in which soldiers returned home from conflict, and how their achievements were celebrated and commemorated. The challenges faced by soldiers returning home from military service are also highlighted, many of which are still faced by members of our armed forces today.

The exhibition is open daily at Spennymoor Leisure Centre concourse, Monday to Friday from 7.00am to 10.00pm, Saturday 7.00am to 6.00pm and Sunday 7.00am to 5.00pm. Admission is free

DLI Collection exhibition: When The Bugle Calls

This touring exhibition explores the role of the regimental band in the British Army. It follows on from Somme 1916: From Durham to the Western Front which was produced in 2016, showcasing objects and archival material belonging to the trustees of the Durham Light Infantry Collection.

Discover the story of the Durham Light Infantry's bands and bugles in the new touring exhibition featuring sounds and objects from the collection. March along with the DLI soldiers and learn more about how music helped them rally their regiment and keep morale alive during the most dark and dangerous times.

The exhibition is at The Word: national centre for the written word in South Shields. It forms a centrepiece to their current exhibition programme and is available there until 2 June 2019. Entrance is free.
