The refurbishment of Owengate which leads to Palace Green in Durham City is continuing in 2018. The works form part of a £1.84 million investment programme to improve the roads and footpaths across Durham City.
The third and final phase of this scheme started in July 2018.
We have now replaced most of the temporary surface with the cobbles, despite poor weather delaying our work. As a result, we have sections that remain incomplete. We are also awaiting the manufacture of removable pedestrian safety bollards.
We anticipate that we will return to Owengate Sunday 11 November for 5 nights to complete the works, which will take place from 6.00pm until 6.00am Sunday to Thursday to minimise disruption.
Work completed so far
Work carried out so far has included widening of the footpaths to improve disability access to Palace Green Library, Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle. We have now been able to reinstate most of the cobbles on Owengate, with some small patches of temporary surfacing remaining until the rest of the works are completed.
