Learn to swim at Consett Leisure Centre or The Louisa Centre
From babies to adults it's never too early or too late to join our swimming lesson programme.
All our leisure centres are closed due to Covid-19. All memberships, including fitness, swimming and swimming lessons, will be frozen for the period of the closure and direct debit payments will be automatically adjusted. If you have paid up front for any membership, the period of the closure will be added to the end of your contract. While we are closed, we hope you can remain physically active and follow @DurhamThriveActive for help to keep you moving and stay healthy.
Learn to swim
Our learn to swim programme at Consett Leisure Centre and The Louisa Centre takes the non swimmer from their first splash, right through to developing confidence and competence in the water. The programme is 'all inclusive' and teaches the fundamental movement skills needed to swim. It follows the Swim England Award criteria as a guideline for assessment purposes.
All members of our Learn to Swim programme are also eligible for free public swimming.

Discovery Ducklings and Ducklings
Young children are introduced to the water and learn confidence with their parents in a structured environment through play and fun.
Dippers take children from their first time in the pool without their parents to competent swimmers. The transition from Ducklings to Dippers begins with a pre-school stage during which the lessons are relaxed and games based. Teachers will then move children through the stages at their own pace, as they develop skills from non-swimmers to beginners and improvers through to advanced swimmers.
Sign up any time and progress at your own pace.
Competitive and Performance Academy
Our academy incorporates the Swim England Athlete Development Support Pathway for Swimming (ADSP) ensuring all swimmers receive the correct training for their age and ability. We have a great reputation of producing high quality swimmers competing at the highest level.
- Dolphins (Stages 8-10)
- Competitive development

The new Learn to swim Home Portal is now available.
Please ask reception for your new thrive card number to register on the portal.
The Learn to swim Home Portal helps you to keep track of your child's progress and competencies, either at home or on the go. You can check which awards and stages your child has completed and what skills they need to complete to achieve their next stage.
The Home Portal can also help you track your payment information and the number of remaining sessions if you pay in 10 weekly blocks. Plus, you can make top up payments online through the Home Portal.
If you have more than one child enrolled on the programme you will be able to add them onto your account so that you can view all of your children's progress in one place.
Contacting your child's swim teacher
If you would like an update from your child's swim teacher you can contact them online using our Learn to Swim progress request form or ask at Reception.
