Parking and Accessibility Standards 2018 consultation

We want your views on the County Durham Parking and Accessibility Standards 2018. The standards seek to provide an appropriate level of parking which is properly designed for a variety of modes of transport.

The draft 2018 Standards were an update to the 2014 standards and set out parking provision requirements for developers at new residential and non-residential developments which includes:

  • general parking
  • electric vehicles
  • cycle parking
  • disabled parking
  • motorcycle parking

Ensuring adequate parking provision will help reduce/remove problems associated with people parking on roads and verges which make it difficult for the accessibility of emergency services, block pushchair and wheelchair users, and cause physical damage to the verges themselves. Increased provision for this variety of transport types will improve access for all and encourage the use of sustainable modes of transport.

What are we proposing?

A draft version of the Parking and Accessibility Standards 2018 document, and includes a higher requirement for electronic vehicle charge points following the government's announcement that it will effectively ban the sale of conventional petrol/diesel cars by 2040. There is also additional cycle parking requirements to support our sustainable transport infrastructure and encourage sustainable modes of travel.
