The leaders of the seven local councils, the North of Tyne Mayor and Northumbria's Police and Crime Commissioner encourage people to work together to move out of Tier 3 as quickly and as safely as possible.

Digital Durham 2018 consultation - phase 2

We are carrying out a consultation to help us to identify areas that may be suitable for future public funding for superfast broadband.

Digital Durham is working to provide superfast broadband in the council areas of County Durham, Gateshead, Sunderland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Tees Valley (Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Redcar and Cleveland). We work in partnership with Broadband Delivery (BDUK), which is part of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

Digital Durham contracts suppliers who receive public funding to provide superfast broadband in areas where it is either not available or not included in any future commercial plans. Decisions on where this public funding can be spent are made following consultation and state aid approval.

To ensure that we invest in the right areas, we are carrying out a consultation in two stages.

Stage 1: consultation with broadband providers

During stage 1, we asked broadband providers to supply information on their existing coverage, in addition to plans for the next three years for both basic and superfast broadband. This information was used to draft a classification of supply in the area and for individual premises.

What are we consulting on?

Stage 2: consultation with broadband providers, members of the public and businesses

The second stage of the consultation is on the draft classification of superfast broadband coverage in relation to postcode areas. Everyone, including broadband suppliers, residents, businesses and other organisations have the opportunity to comment on the classifications and ask questions. If you believe the classifications are not correct, you can also provide evidence to change this.

The map shows the classifications for superfast broadband. A map of basic broadband coverage is also available in the supporting information.

The closing date for comments was 29 July at 5.00pm.
