The Whorlton suspension bridge is categorised as a scheduled monument by Historic England

During a routine inspection of the bridge, that we carried out today a critical safety defect was highlighted requiring the bridge to be temporarily closed to traffic to allow emergency repairs to be carried out.

Mark Readman, our highway services manager, said: "The safety of the public is our primary concern which is why the decision to close the bridge is unavoidable.

"Due to the historic nature of the bridge repair works will require permission from Historic England, as it is categorised as a scheduled monument. This means at the moment we are unable to advise on the duration of the closure and will be providing a further update as soon as we can."

The carriageway will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists, however has been temporarily closed to all vehicular traffic.

A diversion route has been set up for motorists via Winston and Ovington.
