What's changing at Consett Leisure Centre and The Louisa Centre?
From 7 October we are making some changes to our leisure management system, pricing and memberships at Consett Leisure Centre and The Louisa Centre.
The changes are being made to ensure that all 12 of our leisure centres have standardised pricing and systems. We will also be making some exciting new changes to our gym and swim memberships, which will be available from Monday 7 October. This page will help to answer some of your questions or our leisure centre staff will also be happy to help.
What will be changing?
We will be introducing thrive loyalty cards offering you discounts on some leisure activities such as fitness classes. We will be offering thrive cards free of charge (usually £5.00) at Consett Leisure Centre and The Louisa Centre throughout October. Once you have a thrive card you can use this at any Durham County Council leisure centre. Visit Thrive card for more information.
We are making some changes to concession criteria.
What is a concession?
- Under 19 years
- Over 60 years
- Registered disabled
- A carer
- Receiving income support or in receipt of some benefits

Our new swim membership includes unlimited access to general swimming and aqua classes across our eight leisure centres with pools. For detailed pricing and further details visit Swim memberships.
Can I use the gym if I have a swim membership?
The swim membership includes general swimming and aqua classes, you cannot use the gym as part of your membership. If you wish to use the gym you could take out a gym membership which includes unlimited swimming within your gym membership group. Visit Gym memberships for the latest membership prices.
I am a current swim member is the price of my membership going to change?
Current membership terms and conditions will be honoured and the price you pay will remain the same for the duration of your membership. When your swim membership expires if you renew your membership within a 30 day period the old price will be honoured.
From 7 October, Time to swim customers will be able to access free general swimming at any of our eight leisure centres with a pool.
Swimming lesson payments
To find out when payments are due you will receive an email and you can also contact either Consett or Louisa Centre to ask about your payments.
The price for swimming lessons will remain the same - £50 for 10 lessons and can be paid at reception.
Please note we are no longer updating the Home Portal with your payments or your child's progress. However, this information will still be recorded by leisure centre staff.
Check your child's progress
To check your child's progress, please make a request using our Learn to Swim progress request form and your child's swim teacher will reply to you.
New Learn to Swim home portal
We will soon be introducing a new Learn to Swim Home Portal and some new ways to pay. Once this is available you will be able to pay by monthly Direct Debit or continue to pay in blocks of 10 lessons, if you prefer. We will also be able to accept telephone payments. You will also be able to track your child's progress.
Before this goes live we will contact you with information on how to register. Your details will be transferred across from the old Home Portal.
We will be introducing new gym memberships at Consett Leisure Centre and The Louisa Centre, this will include changes to concessionary eligibility and the inclusion of fitness classes.
What will be included in a new gym membership?
Gym memberships are grouped according to your leisure centre and you can use any centre within your membership group.
Membership benefits include:
- Multi-site use within your group
- A one to one induction and personal fitness plan
- Free swimming within your membership group
- Fitness classes at leisure centres within your membership group
- A free thrive card, which offers discounts at centres outside of your membership group

I am a current gym member is the price of my membership going to change?

I am a current member of an old membership paying by Direct Debit, I want to take advantage of the new membership price and package can I do this?
You can upgrade your old gym membership to a new gym membership at any point during your existing contract. If you do you would need to sign a new 12 month agreement from the date of upgrade.
Can I take out a new membership before 7 October?
No, new memberships will not be available until 7 October.
I am a returning gym member, will I pay the same price I paid for membership in the past or the new membership price?
From 7 October you will pay the new gym membership price.
Can I pay up front?
We have an annual paid in full membership available. Ask a member of staff for details.
Can I use the facilities at other leisure centres if I have a gym membership?
From 7 October, you will still be able to use the facilities at both Consett Leisure Centre and The Louisa Centre.
What does a leisure group mean?
Our leisure centres are grouped according to their facilities, you can use any of the centres which fall into your membership group. Consett Leisure Centre and The Louisa Centre fall into a Group four membership which means gym members can use either site.
What Membership Group will Consett Leisure Centre and The Louisa Centre fall into?
Group four - which means that members can use the facilities at Consett Leisure Centre and The Louisa Centre.
What if I have a group four membership but would like to swim at another leisure centre?
You can swim free of charge at Consett Leisure Centre and The Louisa Centre. If you wish to swim at another one of our pools outside of your membership you can pay £1 to do so.
What is a standard non contract membership?
If you don't want to commit to a 12 month contract you can pay a joining fee of £20.00 to take out a monthly standard non contract gym membership. A cancellation policy will apply please speak to a member of staff for more detail. If you cancel and want to renew this membership at a later date you would need to pay the joining fee and membership fee.
Do I need an induction at every leisure centre gym I use?
No, however members will be required to book an appointment before using the gym. In this appointment you will be provided with essential site specific information.
If I have a gym membership can I use the gym at any time?
Yes - you can use the gym when it best suits you during opening hours. This applies to new and existing memberships. However, time restrictions apply to Young Lifestyle gym memberships.
Employers can sign up to the Corporate membership scheme and this entitles employees to an 18% discount on standard memberships. Visit Health and fitness corporate membership scheme for more information.
Young Lifestyle membership
We will be introducing a new Young Lifestyle membership for 11-15 year olds.
What's included in a Young Lifestyle gym membership?
- Access to the gym at your home centre
- Selected fitness classes at your home centre
- Free swimming at any pool
- A free thrive card
- Age restrictions apply to opening hours and some fitness classes
If I have a Young Lifestyles Membership can I use the facilities at other leisure centres?
You can only access the gym facilities at the leisure centres that you took out the membership. You can however swim for free at any leisure centre during general swimming sessions with this membership.
I have a gym membership do I have to pay for fitness classes?
A range of classes are included in your gym membership package. Aqua classes are excluded. Please speak to a member of staff at your leisure centre for more details.
Will there be changes to the Fitness Class membership?
No, the monthly Fitness Class membership will continue.
Why are the price of casual fitness classes increasing?
We have harmonised prices across all of our leisure centres to provide a fair and competitive offer. The new pricing enables customers to pay the same for fitness classes at any of our leisure centres. For example, you will pay the same for price for a fitness class in Bishop Auckland as you would in Consett. Can I book in advance for fitness classes?
Yes, if you are a thrive card holder you can book seven days in advance at your leisure centre. A new online booking system will be coming soon.
