Binchester Roman Fort set to reopen
A popular history attraction near Bishop Auckland is set to reopen after closing due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The site, which includes a well-preserved Roman fort dating back to 75AD, is now opening the doors to the past once again from Saturday 1 August.
Opening times will be shorter than usual, every day between 10.30am and 4pm.
Measures are in place for adhering to Government guidelines on coronavirus. The site will offer extra facilities for hand sanitation, contactless card payments, and one-way systems.
David Mason, our principal archaeologist, said: "We are extremely pleased to be welcoming visitors back to this fascinating site. Things will be a little different to usual as we try and ensure the safety of staff and visitors. There will be no re-enactment events this season and we cannot allow large groups of people at this time. We would ask people to keep two metres apart from those not in their household and wash their hands before and after their visit.
"Despite these new measures, Binchester remains a great day out and we will be thrilled to welcome people back."
