Devolution update - an open letter from our Leader

Published March 03, 2022 12.55pm

I wanted to write to you to set out the current position regarding devolution in County Durham.

The white paper was published on 4 February 2022 and set out that County Durham was one of nine areas to be taken forward for further discussions for what will be new 'County Devolution' deals.

We are aware that many county areas expressed an interest in being taken forward in the initial tranche of council areas for further discussions, and I am looking forward to discussing how a deal can be developed that benefits our great county.

As we have in the past, we will continue to work with our colleagues to the north and south of County Durham regardless of the outcome of our devolution discussions.

To some extent we will be developing the framework for county deals as we take forward discussions with government. There is no tried and tested formula in place for county deals however I see that as an opportunity to shape the outcomes for our area and to tailor a deal to our own requirements as we move forward.

I will keep you informed of progress and future engagement once we have a clearer indication of next steps from government.

Best wishes

Councillor Amanda Hopgood
