Equipment, training and support

Helmets and equipment are provided alongside the bikes, while free training and support is also available for those who want to improve their skills and confidence.

Our initiative, which is provided with support from Recyke Y'Bike and Dr. Spokes, is also available to those who live or work in Framwellgate Moor, Pity Me, Newton Hall, Brasside and Shildon.

Healthier forms of travel

Cllr Elizabeth Scott, Cabinet member for economy and partnerships, said: "Following the pandemic, more people are walking and cycling, and we want to encourage people to continue to use these healthier forms of travel. The Borrow a Bike scheme is just one of the improvements we're making to our walking and cycling networks.

"By providing free access to a bike, we're helping people who want to return to their workplace, in line with government guidance, but who need transport. It also offers a more sustainable mode of transport, supporting our commitment to protecting the environment and reducing carbon emissions."
