The Oliver McGowan Training on Learning Disability and Autism Course


This course is delivered in partnership with the NHS and has been made available by E- Learning for Healthcare, NHS Health Education England.

The course aims to enable health and social care workforce to better support people with a learning disability and autistic people.

Who the course is for?

This E-Learning course is for all health and social care staff and should be completed as best practice. 

Learning method

The course is an E- Learning course and will take approximately 90 minutes to complete. 

Once you have completed the E-Learning course the next part of the training is:

  • Either a live one hour online interactive session co delivered by a person with a learning disability and an autistic person along with a facilitator for those needing Tier 1. (For people who require a general awareness of the support autistic people or people with a learning disability may need).
  • Or, a 1-day face to face training co delivered by a person with a learning disability and an autistic person and trainer for people who require Tier 2, (For people who may need to provide care and support for autistic people or people with a learning disability).

It is the employer's responsibility to ensure staff have the appropriate training for their roles and what tier they should complete. 

What you will learn? 

The course will help you understand:

  • What a learning disability is and the challenges and experiences of people with a learning disability
  • What autism is and the challenges and experiences of autistic people
  • The key aspects of communication with autistic people and people with learning disabilities
  • What we mean by reasonable adjustment and how best to provide
