Handyperson service

The County Durham Handyperson service undertakes small scale jobs for residents of County Durham who are 60 or over, disabled, a victim of crime, at high risk of falling or who are vulnerable in other ways.

The service can undertake small jobs in and around your home, taking up to a maximum of two hours, which affect your safety, security and comfort. The Handyperson can do a home safety check to identify work that needs to be done to help you feel safe and prevent you from tripping or falling.

The service is available to both owner occupiers and tenants, but tenants will need to check first whether some jobs are the responsibility of their landlords.

We work in partnership with occupational therapists and other health professionals when providing minor adaptations. We want to make sure you are safe and can live independently in your home for as long as possible.

What services?

Some of the services we offer are:

  • replace light bulbs
  • move pieces of furniture
  • change tap washers
  • fit new or replacement locks
  • hang pictures and mirrors
  • put up curtain rails
  • put up shelves
  • fit or replace toilet seats

The list above is not exhaustive, if you have any questions about other jobs which you may need assistance with please give us a call to discuss how we may be able to help you.

How much does it cost?

Handyperson tasks

A charge of £15 per visit (inclusive of VAT) for up to an hour is payable by the client. This can cover one or more different jobs carried out within that time. If the jobs take over one hour an additional £15 will be payable. Clients will be asked to pay for materials used (at cost price) unless you supply them yourself.

The Handyperson service can only undertake small jobs around the home up to a maximum of two hours.

Minor adaptations

Clients referred directly from a Health or Social Care professional or Hospital Discharge Team will have materials and labour charges waived.

In all circumstances, any work which may be chargeable would be discussed fully with the customer prior to any work being carried out on their behalf.
