The leaders of the seven local councils, the North of Tyne Mayor and Northumbria's Police and Crime Commissioner encourage people to work together to move out of Tier 3 as quickly and as safely as possible.

Replacement of Witton Park bridge

The £2.5m scheme will see the demolition of the existing bridge, repairs to the supports and piers, and the installation of the new bridge, with the replacement bridge scheduled to re-open in late autumn 2020.

Witton Park bridgeBackground

In July 2018, we were forced to extend the temporary closure of the bridge after serious structural defects where found that threatened the safety of the public.

Since then, we have been exploring a number of options for the bridge.

The scheme

The scheme to replace the bridge will be in three main phases:

  • June to August 2020: demolition of the existing structure will begin early next week and should be completed by early August
  • August to September 2020: repairs to the bridge support
  • September to late autumn 2020: installation of the new bridge

The C93 will remain closed between the villages of Witton Park and High Grange, with a signed diversion continuing via the A68 and the neighbouring village of Witton-le-Wear.
