Furniture that contains padding, foam or is upholstered (Waste Upholstered Domestic Seating (WUDS))

It's now a legal requirement to separate WUDS if they contain Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) from those which do not.

We will still collect them both on the same day, but they will be collected separately. POPs in WUDS are no risk if they are intact, however the law requires us to collect these items separately from other items in bulky collections to ensure their safe disposal.

Examples of furniture containing POPs:

  • foam padding such as sofas, armchairs and futons
  • padded/cushioned seats such as dining chairs and office chairs
  • padded footstools
  • bean bags

For more details see Gov.uk: manage waste upholstered domestic seating containing POPs.

Items we cannot collect

There are items that we cannot collect, these include: plasterboard, asbestos, hazardous waste, tyres, gas canisters/bottles, paint tins containing paint, chemicals, sun bed tubes, fluorescent light tubes and large batteries (from ride on toys/mobility scooters).

On the day of collection

You must:

  • place all items together at the kerbside where your bin is normally collected (WUDS and non-WUDS items must be separated and not mixed together)
  • only put out for collection the things you have booked with us - we will not take extra items away
  • bag small items
  • put your items out for 7.00am on the collection day, but please do not put them out the day before as this could lead to an unlicensed person taking them and possibly flytipping them
  • make sure that if items are torn and damaged, no foam is exposed when we collect the item - if any WUDS have not been repaired well enough, they will not be taken and we will not be able to return)

Please note that we cannot enter the homes/properties, and do not collect items from inside. This includes residents on the assist list.

Other options

It may be that this is not the best way to get rid of your large items. Also consider:

These bulky collection prices are for domestic household properties only, please see our business waste collection information for details on commercial waste collections.
