Money for care leavers to set up home

We will give you up to £3000 to buy essential furniture and home electricals (for example cooker or fridge) when you set up your own home.

To apply for this money, contact Your Young Person's Advisor (YPA) or Your Next Steps social worker.

How the setting up home allowance works

Once you have chatted to your YPA about setting up home, they can put an application in for you, for the allowance.

The money will go to them and they work out with you what you need, how much it will cost and how best to spend the money.

Your YPA will put in the orders for you using their card.

What you can buy

Your YPA must follow a set of guidelines for spending the allowance. This is to make sure you get what you need and don't spend too much on one item, meaning you don't have enough for other essentials.

The kinds of things you can use the money on are:

  • beds and bedding
  • furniture
  • kitchen equipment
  • laundry equipment
  • flooring
  • other home essentials
