How to apply for a job with us

Thank you for your interest in applying for a role with us. Our recruitment process is designed to be transparent, fair, and to promote equality. It will be tailored to the specific role being advertised. We are committed to ensuring that all applicants are treated with fairness and respect, with no discrimination at any stage. We aim to make the recruitment process a positive experience, helping you feel confident and able to showcase your skills. We want you to feel welcome and well supported throughout the application and selection process.

Each job we advertise includes a detailed description of the role, including required skills, experience, and qualifications. Please read it carefully and refer to it when completing your application, as it will be used to shortlist candidates. Tailor your application to the specific role. Highlight how you meet the essential and desirable criteria, using relevant examples to demonstrate your skills, experiences, and values.

All applications must be submitted on the North East Jobs portal. However, if required you can Contact Recruitment to ask for a paper application form.

SectionWhat this covers

Equal opportunities

We are committed to equal opportunities and encourage you to disclose if you're a Looked After Young Person, veteran, or have a disability. This section is optional, and your responses will be kept confidential for statistical purposes only.

Personal details

Provide your basic personal information, which will be separated before the selection process begins.

Important Information

This section includes declarations about data protection, criminal records, and relationships with council staff.

Education and qualifications

Provide details of your education and any relevant memberships. If successful, you'll need to present original certificates for any essential qualifications.

Employment details

Provide details of your current role, including salary.

Full employment history

Provide information on all previous jobs, starting with the most recent. Explain any gaps in employment.

Person specification / personal statement

Use this section to show how you meet the essential and desirable criteria listed in the person specification and be sure to include relevant examples. Applications that don't meet the essential qualifications will not be shortlisted. We recommend using headings that match the person specification to make it easier for the recruiting lead officer to review.

References

Provide two referees: your current or most recent employer, or the Head Teacher if you're a recent school leaver. Please do not use family members. References will only be contacted if you are shortlisted.

Additional information

Use this section to detail any additional skills or experiences that might be relevant but haven't been covered elsewhere. Ensure that essential or desirable criteria are detailed in your person specification section for shortlisting.

The selection process

Your application will be anonymized and reviewed against the job criteria by the recruiting panel. If shortlisted, you'll be invited for an interview - the details will be sent to your North East Jobs account. If you've been invited for an interview, congratulations! You've successfully passed the first stage of the selection process and stood out among other applicants.

We are proud to operate guaranteed interview schemes under our commitment to disability confident, veterans and care leavers. We also make reasonable adjustments at interview for candidates who request them. Let us know when you confirm your attendance so that we can accommodate your needs. See How we ensure fair recruitment for more information. The recruiting panel understands that it's normal to feel nervous, as interviews are not something we do daily. Rest assured, they are experienced and trained to create a supportive environment and will do everything they can to make the experience positive for you.

If you are the successful candidate, the recruiting lead will contact you by telephone and offer the position. The offer of employment will be subject to certain pre-employment clearances.

Pre-employment checks

Before starting, we'll need to complete several checks, including:

  • two satisfactory references
  • a health declaration
  • verification of essential qualifications
  • Right to Work documentation
  • criminal conviction declaration

Additional checks may be required depending on the role.

We look forward to receiving your application!
