Our car parks offer free parking after 2.00pm in Durham City. This does not include Durham City Park and Ride, Hardwick Park, Wharton Park and Riverside Park (South Ropery Lane, North Ropery Lane and the Donald Owen Clark car parks) and car parks that we do not own.

Howlands Farm Park and Ride


Howlands Farm Park and Ride site is located less than one mile after joining A177 at the A167 / A177 roundabout.

Opening times and bus frequencies

Car parks are open from 7.00am to 7.00pm, Monday to Saturday.

Buses run every 15 minutes, Monday to Saturday.

  • The bus leaves the Park and Ride at 7, 22, 37 and 52 minutes past the hour. The first bus is at 7.07am and the last bus is at 6.37pm.

Our Park and Ride sites are closed on bank holidays.

Where the buses go

Howlands Farm stops at Church Street, New Elvet and Milburngate Bridge.

How much it costs

For only £2 per person, you can park until 7.00pm, get unlimited travel on the park and ride buses for the day.

Under 16s are free if they're accompanied by an adult over 21. English bus pass holders travel for free after 9.30am, Monday to Friday and all day Saturday. Before 9.30am on weekdays, there's a 50p charge for customers using a bus pass issued in County Durham.

You need to buy a ticket from the park and ride site. The ticket machine will take coins and cards (including contactless) but will not take notes.

You can also pay via contactless on our buses.

Be aware that parking at the sites is only for people using the park and ride buses. The sites close at 7.00pm and cars cannot be left overnight. Breaking these rules may result in you receiving a parking ticket.

Parking at the park and ride sites is free for all users, providing you use the park and ride bus service to leave the site for your onward journey.

What facilities there are

Dogs are allowed on our buses as long as they are on a lead.

Our secure parking sites are fully covered by CCTV as well as regularly patrolled by security. You can also leave your details with the site operator and we'll contact you if there's any problem with your car, such as the lights being left on.

Travel safely

We are introducing a range of measures so that you can travel safely:

  • Handwashing facilities and hand sanitiser stations are available at each site.
  • Although not mandatory, we would encourage wearing of a face covering on our buses (unless you are exempt).
  • Our machines are cleaned regularly, but we ask you to pay by contactless where possible.
  • Our toilets are open and cleaned regularly.
