Fair Trading

Every day millions of consumer transactions take place in the country. It is our job to ensure a fair, safe and equitable trading environment for consumers and businesses in County Durham.

Business information and advice

If you are a business owner you can find advice and guidance on consumer law online from the Business Companion website.

Further business advice is also available on the Business Companion website which covers retailers responsibilities under the Consumer Rights Act. This can be found on the Sale and supply of goods in-depth guide.

If you are a business dealing with consumers by means of distance trading methods, such as the internet, catalogues, newspapers and magazines, information can be found on the Distance sales quick guide.

Consumer enquiries

If you are a member of the public, you can get basic advice on fair trading issues by contacting the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline. Their Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133, is a government funded service giving clear, practical advice on the majority of consumer complaints.

For further information on consumer enquiries please refer to our consumer advice page.
