Cultivate4Life

The Cree member is 24 and unemployed. He was isolated, had limited social skills and his confidence was low. He came to Cultivate4Life on a Prince's Trust project in the summer of 2019. While here with the Trust, he learned about Cultivate4Life. Following the end of this project, he requested to volunteer, via the DWP, as he wanted to work with us.

He enjoys the work; has taken to woodworking; helps on the allotment and with our community gardening projects. His social skills have improved, and he is looking for either a gardening job or training for a horticultural qualification.

How did Cree support?

The support we provide is:

  1. Social support and company to help with his social isolation, which has been exacerbated with COVID-19 lockdowns.
  2. A variety of work that he has contributed to and enjoys - he still volunteers with us! This has helped give a sense of purpose in life although he still lacks some motivation, despite him being a good worker.
  3. I have offered advice over his time here. It would appear that - after some time - he is now making a significant effort to find work in gardening or agree to training for a horticultural qualification.

What has the impact been?

It has taken some time, but his confidence has improved. He will discuss things that concern him now. He also talks with other volunteers whereas initially he would remain quiet in communal meals, for example. He has said on a few occasions that he enjoys being at Cultivate4Life and he appreciates the time with us.

He recently decided to take up a traineeship in gardening and may move onto that in the near future.

Quote

Talking to me: 'I enjoy the woodworking and seeing how to make things.'

Any other comments

From a position of little confidence and low motivation, he has worked well and become more socially connected. He still is reserved but has improved significantly since joining us. The fact that he has made up his own mind to pursue a traineeship is a huge step forward for him.
