Proposed conservation area status for Ovington (phase two)

We now want your views on the draft Conservation Area Character Appraisal document.

During 2022, we ran a three-stage consultation process with residents of Ovington to determine if there was support for a Conservation Area designation for the village of Ovington.  Most responses received were in favour of the designation of Ovington as a conservation area which enabled us to prepare a conservation area character appraisal document and refine it as part of the consultation process.

To obtain a copy of the consultation report, please contact consultations@durham.gov.uk

Background

Earlier this year, we carried out a consultation on the proposed conservation area status for Ovington, after a request from the Parish Council. A conservation area designation means that the area has special architectural or historic interest where the character and appearance should be preserved or enhanced. More than 70% of responses from the public consultation were in favour of the proposal.

What is happening now

The next stage is to consult on a draft Conservation Area Character Appraisal. See Ovington Conservation Area Appraisal draft (PDF, 10 MB).

We have developed the draft Appraisal and we want your views and comments on its content. The document describes the special character of Ovington and proposes the boundary of the conservation area and the properties which would be subject to an Article 4 Direction. An Article 4 Direction removes certain permitted development rights to preserve the special character of a conservation area through the planning process.

We have also written to every residential property in Ovington and interested parties to inform them of this consultation.

Have your say

The closing date for comments was 5.00pm on Friday 22 July 2022.

What happens next

Once we receive comments on the draft conservation area character appraisal these will be reviewed by Durham County Council and responded to in a revised conservation area character appraisal prior to the formal designation of the area.
