Specialty training in public health

There is specialty training available if you are interested in a career in public health.

Specialty Training Programme

If you are interested in a career in public health, you might consider applying for the Specialty Training Programme.

This is a five year full-time programme of training including one year of study for a Master's degree in Public Health. There is a national recruitment exercise each year in November or December with successful applicants starting the programme in the following August each year. Around 60 to 90 places are offered each year.

Successful completion of the training would make you eligible for registration as a public health specialist and enable you to apply for Consultant in Public Health posts in the UK.

Further information on the programme is available at Faculty of Public Health - National Public Health Specialty Training Recruitment.

Durham Training Location

We support the North East Specialty Training Programme for public health registrars.

Two places are offered each year under the supervision of a Consultant in Public Health. These placements provide opportunities for gaining a broad range of public heath skills wherever you are in your training programme.

Examples of work done previously by Specialty Registrars include:

  • Health Impact Assessment to support the development of a Best Start in Life programme.
  • Developing an Ageing Well Strategy.
  • Audit of immunisation uptake.
  • Development of a sexual health strategy.

If you would like to undertake your specialist training in County Durham, please Contact Public Health.
