More than 260 new spaces to be created at Durham City Park and Ride site

We are extending our Sniperley site, located between the A691 and A167, in a move that will increase the total number of parking spaces to in excess of 580.

The extension will create an additional 262 spaces including 29 disabled bays, 18 electric charging bays and four motorhome bays.

Extended site will help reduce congestion

Cllr Elizabeth Scott, our Cabinet member for economy and partnerships, said: "Our Park and Ride sites play a big part in reducing congestion in Durham City centre by giving people the option of leaving their cars on the outskirts of the city and hopping on a bus to complete their journey.

"The Sniperley Park and Ride site is an attractive option for people travelling into Durham City centre from Consett and Chester-le-Street. This scheme will increase the capacity of the site by around 80 per cent, enabling us to offer more people a more sustainable journey to the city centre.

"It will also support sustainable economic growth in Durham City in the future."

Work will start later this summer

Construction work will get under way later this summer and is expected to be completed in Spring 2024.

We have secured £1.6million from the government's Transforming Cities Fund to deliver the scheme.

The Transforming Cities Fund Programme provides £198 million of capital investment in public transport, sustainable transport and public places for the North East.

It is an ambitious programme of investment which has been designed to transform and improve the local economy, environment and society.

The North East Transforming Cities Fund Programme provides investment in strategic bus corridors, walking and cycling routes around towns and city centres, improvements to rail station gateways, Park and Ride and local Metro services through the delivery of the Metro Flow project.
