A177 Whitechurch Junction
The A177 Stockton Road junction is a busy junction linking Durham University students to Durham City.
There are often large crowds of pedestrians crossing the road and spilling onto the crossing islands making an unsafe environment for all road users.
What work will be completed?
Durham County Council will be completing work to improve pedestrian facilities at the A177 Stockton Road (Whitechurch) junction in Durham City, commencing Monday 10th July 2023 and programmed for completion by Autumn.
The works will improve pedestrian safety and comfort levels at this busy junction and the current traffic signal infrastructure will be upgraded to aid traffic flow.
Two crossing islands will be removed and the footways on all corners of the junction will be extended to create more space for pedestrians waiting to cross the road.
A series of parking bays will need to be temporarily suspended on Church Street adjacent house numbers 22 to 26. This will allow for traffic management to be implemented during the works.
A phased plan has been created which will limit disruption to all road users. Work has been coordinated to take place during the academic summer holidays when ordinarily there will be fewer people using the crossing points.
Programme of works
Pedestrians are encouraged to follow diversion routes in place throughout the schemes of works. Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journey as there may be delays.
