Ouston Junior School film making

Ouston Junior School is located near Chester-le-Street and is seven miles south west of Newcastle.

Movie making

A major part of the travel plan for Ouston Junior School highlights the promotion of active travel messages delivered by the pupils themselves.

During International Walk to School Month older pupils were tasked with making a film about their experiences on the school journey. Pupils decided what ideas they wanted to portray in the film before drawing up their very own storyboard and adding the drama to it. A typical walk to school is captured on film with strong reminders about the damage cars can do to the environment.

Alongside a professional film maker, pupils soon got to grips with handling the equipment and developed a script about their walking to school experiences. The completed DVD is being used to promote more walking to and from school placing emphasis upon reducing carbon footprint and cutting car costs whilst increasing health and fitness.

The school welcomed the opportunity to produce the film. Annette Tyrrell, School Travel Plan Coordinator at the school said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for all pupils to learn about film making whilst also making use of a powerful media tool taking forward our travel planning ideas. Everyone at the school is delighted with the results, especially the children who took the starring role."
