Work to demolish a derelict amusement arcade and create a new public space in Bishop Auckland will begin next week.

Work to begin on linking Fore and North Bondgate

The building as it stands now

We will be commencing demolition of the building located at 58-59 Fore and North Bondgate on Monday (24 July).

Following the demolition, a new public space will be established with seating areas and greenery creating a safe and welcoming space.

It will also improve the connectivity between the two streets making it easier for visitors to access the range of independent shops and businesses in both areas.

Increasing footfall

Cllr Elizabeth Scott, our Cabinet member for economy and partnerships, said: "The former amusement arcade has stood vacant for many years and has been described as an eyesore by the local community.

"We are pleased to begin work on demolishing the site to create a new welcoming public space that will link up the two streets and increase footfall to the town centre. The project will contribute to our ambitious plans to transform the town into a thriving visitor destination."

The development is a key project within the Future High Streets Fund programme to regenerate the town. It is hoped the work will be complete in early 2024.
