City footbridge to remain closed
A footbridge in Durham City is to remain closed after structural issues were uncovered during a recent inspection.
Leazes Footbridge, which crosses the A690 and provides pedestrian access from Claypath to the city centre and riverside, has been closed to the public since last week.
The closure follows a routine inspection by our staff, which identified a need for more detailed investigations. Further surveys by a specialist contractor have subsequently revealed concerns regarding the joints to the underside of the bridge.
As a result, the bridge will remain closed while we consider our next steps. A signed diversion for pedestrians and cyclists will remain in place while the bridge is closed.
Paul Watson, our Strategic Highways Manager, said: "It is important that we fully consider the results of the investigations carried out by the contractor and look at all available options for the future of the footbridge.
"We appreciate that the bridge is very well used, providing a key route from Claypath into the city centre, so would like to thank the public for their patience.
"We would encourage everyone wishing to cross the road to use the signed diversion."
