Highways are responsible for the maintenance of the Highway Infrastructure across County Durham, including approximately 3,800km of carriageway, 500 road bridges and 80,000 streetlights.  This includes road maintenance, street lighting, drainage and flooding, winter maintenance, traffic management, highway development, bridges and structures.

Roles include: Structural Design Engineer, Civil Engineer, Civil Engineering Technician, Chargehand Electrician, Street Authority Permit Inspector, Highways Superintendent.

County Durham has some of the most beautiful countryside and coastal landscapes in Britain. It is home to a huge variety of plants and animals, and the area has a fascinating historical and geological heritage.

The Parks and Countryside Service looks after the countryside estate for people and wildlife.  They balance access and recreation for people with the protection of wildlife and habitats.

Roles include: Countryside Ranger, Arborist, Community Programme Coordinator, Café Assistant, Assistant Ranger, Education Officer.

Our Waste Operation team are responsible for the safe collection of all municipal household waste generated in County Durham and have responsibility for four waste transfer stations.  The service has around 300 staff that collect 252,000 bins every week along with bulky, white goods, clinical and garden waste collections.

Roles include: Waste Operative, Weighbridge Operative, Reception Hall Attendant, Waste Transfer Station Supervisor, HGV Driver, Waste Manager

Our Community Protection teams hold responsibility for the functions of environmental health, trading standards and licensing.  Community Protection colleagues help protect and improve the health, safety, economic wellbeing and environment of County Durham communities.

Roles include: Safer Places Officer, Consumer Safety Officer, Consumer Safety Manager, Trading Standards Officer, Environmental Health Practitioner, Licensing Enforcement Officer.
