Motorists advised of potential disruption at A689 Newton Cap Viaduct
Motorists who use the A689 Newton Cap Viaduct in Bishop Auckland are being advised of the potential for short delays to their journeys as essential works resume.
Work to install fencing and low-level LED lighting to help illuminate the viaduct's pedestrian walkway, began on 18 September. It follows completion of work to improve signage and install CCTV cameras.
The latest work will be carried out as quickly as possible to minimise disruption and is currently scheduled for completion by summer 2024.
It is being carried out in a phased approach to allow traffic and pedestrians to continue crossing the viaduct while work takes place.
However there is a need for two-way traffic lights and footpath closures, although these will be on one side of the road only at all times. Pedestrian crossings will be operational at all times to allow people to cross the road safely while signs are in place in the area to make drivers aware.
Motorists may experience some minor delays and are thanked for their patience and understanding while the work is carried out.
