Shopfront Design Guide Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) consultation

We want your views on our new document, which sets out guidance to promote good shopfront design, restoration, and refurbishment.

Thank you to all who responded to the consultation on the first draft of this document, which took place late 2023. Feedback will be considered as part of the drafting of the next version of the document and consulted on May/June 2024.

Background

The County Durham Plan (CDP) was adopted in October 2020. It provides a framework for new planning developments and helps to assess planning applications up to 2035. This draft SPD supports a range of policies in the CDP.

What the SPD includes

The SPD sets out guidance to promote good shopfront design, restoration, and refurbishment especially for historic buildings and in conservation areas, and includes:

  • Design principles to ensure good design and how best to incorporate corporate logos, signage, canopies, lighting, maintenance, and security.
  • Key elements of shopfront design.
  • Development management and pre-application enquires.
  • Policy context and considering heritage requirements.
