Our staff networks


We have several staff networks in place, including Armed Forces, Carers, Disability, LGBT+, Menopause, and Race Equality and Diversity. Our networks have proved to be an invaluable means of raising awareness and supporting staff. We encourage and support the development of the networks; they provide members with the opportunity to support one another, connect, and discuss prevalent issues and enact change.

The networks are also open to allies, to ensure we all pull together in a positive and proactive way.

Armed forces and veteran network

Our armed forces and veteran staff network gives a voice and platform to staff across the council who are members of the armed forces community, whether they are a spouse or partner of serving personnel, a reservist, a cadet force adult volunteer, a veteran, or a close family member of any of these. It provides a safe and confidential space where staff have the opportunity to discuss and influence issues affecting members of the armed forces community with key decision-makers.

Disability network

We have an active disability staff network, which provides support to colleagues, as well as developing corporate policies, training and awareness. It also provides support through our disability buddy scheme.

The network has been instrumental in helping to raise awareness, through a number of training sessions such as Deaf communications,  Dyslexia, Autism. The network also offers advice in terms of employment policies and initiatives. It is currently developing a 'disability peer support' scheme which will provide assistance to new members of staff.

Employees who care network

Our employees who care staff network meets on a regular basis. Our carer organisation, Durham County Carers Support (DCCS) are also part of this group and attend the Coffee and Chat sessions, providing expert support and signposting. DCCS can provide information and guidance around a range of services designed to help carers such as carer breaks, counselling, training and help with accessing carer emergency support. We have a range of flexible working arrangements which helps those with caring responsibilities.

LGBT+ network

The staff network meets around four times a year and also plans informal get-togethers. The network is fully inclusive and welcomes all Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and non-binary staff as well as anyone who may have an interest or wish to support colleagues, friends or family.

The network have successfully raised awareness of a number of key dates throughout the year, as well as devising an online LGBT training course. The network also has a sub group who help support and volunteer at Durham Pride UK.

Menopause network

The network is an informal peer support group offering staff a space to connect with others, learn and share their experiences. Everyone is welcome, whether you have personal experience of menopause or are looking to support friends, family members or colleagues. We aim to increase awareness of this important topic, and stop it being a taboo subject in the workplace.

Race, Equality and Diversity network

This group has formed to give a voice and platform to staff across the council who are from black and minority ethnic background. Our network provides a safe and confidential space where staff have the opportunity to discuss and influence issues affecting ethnic minority staff, with key decision makers.

The network plays a key role in promoting Black History Month. The network have also established a regional group, to link in with other race equality staff network groups across the north-east.
