Sign up to garden waste collections for 2024

Published December 18, 2023 9.35am

County Durham residents can now sign up for garden waste bin collections for 2024.

Garden Waste collections 2024

Garden waste

Our garden waste scheme runs from April to November across 17 fortnightly collections, with the price frozen at the same as last year at £38.

We are reminding residents that to receive all 17 collections in the new year they must sign up to the scheme by Thursday 14 February, even if they received collections this year.

Green materials

Residents who sign up to the scheme can use their garden waste bin for materials including:

  • Grass cuttings
  • Shrubs
  • Leaves
  • Weeds
  • Flowers and bedding plants
  • Hedge clippings
  • Small branches

Reduce emissions

Cllr Mark Wilkes, our Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and climate change, said: "Our garden waste collection scheme ensures green materials, such as plants and grass cuttings, are composted and reused rather than binned, helping to save on carbon emissions. It is also a great way for anyone with a garden or grassed yard to dispose of larger amounts of leaves and branches without making regular trips to recycling centres.

"We would encourage residents who wish to have a garden waste bin to sign up before February to receive all collections and make the most of the scheme."

To sign up to the service or find out if a property is eligible, call 03000 261 000 or visit our garden waste collections page.

Eligible properties

We provide garden waste collections to eligible properties in the county which now includes areas of Teesdale previously supported by the Rotters scheme.

The scheme costs £38 for 17 fortnightly collections which begin in April. Those who sign up will be sent a bin sticker which should be attached to the bin under the handle.

All bins should be put out for collection by 7am on collection day. Collection days can be found by entering the postcode and property number at My Durham search.
