A690 landslip repair
An essential landslip repair scheme is planned on the A690 in Durham City. The works are taking place within the verge of the A690's north eastbound carriageway, north east of Gilesgate roundabout, at the boundary with the Northern Powergrid training centre.
Work that will be happening
Preparatory works are now complete which included ground investigations, vegetation clearance and tree felling. The main works, which involve stabilising the embankment alongside the road, will commence in spring 2025.
The final design will be completed utilising information provided by data obtained from the initial ground investigation, but it is expected to take the form of an anchored contiguous piled wall. This will be centred on the northern embankment of the A690 carriageway and able to sustain the future operation of the highway. Consideration will be given to a replanting scheme at the end of the project.

Updates
December 2024
Preparatory works are now complete. Detailed design of the A690 junction improvement works and piled retaining wall are progressing well and land negotiations are ongoing. As part of the works, there is also a requirement to undertake a diversion of public utility apparatus, which we anticipate in early 2025. Once land negotiations and diversion works are complete, the junction improvement works can commence, prior to the installation of the piled wall.
