Preparatory works start ahead of A690 landslip repair

Published February 02, 2024 9.17am

Preparatory works are underway alongside the A690 ahead of an essential landslip repair scheme.

The works are taking place on the verge of the A690's north eastbound carriageway, north east of Gilesgate roundabout, at the boundary with the Northern Powergrid training centre.

Overnight closures of one lane

They will run throughout February and some overnight single lane closures will be put in place on the eastbound carriageway.

These closures will be in effect from 7pm to 6am from Monday 12 February to Friday 16 February and from Monday 19 February to Friday 23 February.

The repair scheme itself, which involves stabilising the bank alongside the road, will then get underway in the summer.

'Essential works necessary to protect the road's future'

Anthea Smith, our highways services manager, said: "The A690 is one of the main routes into and out of Durham City and the history of ground movement at this location means these essential works are necessary to protect the road's future.

"We have planned the preparatory works in a way that will keep disruption to a minimum, restricting closures to a single lane, so traffic can still pass, and scheduled these to take place overnight.

"We are currently working on the details of the repair scheme and associated traffic management and will provide this information once everything has been confirmed."
