A swimming pool in County Durham is reopening to the public following essential maintenance.

Peterlee Leisure Centre pool reopening - April 2024

The pool at Peterlee Leisure Centre will reopen on Monday (29 April) after initially being closed so we could carry out works in the building's plant room.

During the improvements, we discovered additional work was needed to repair and replace the original pool pipes, which were in a deteriorating condition.

Peterlee Leisure Centre transformation now complete

Cllr James Rowlandson, our Cabinet member for resources, investment and assets, said: "We are committed to redeveloping our leisure centres so that residents can enjoy an enhanced and modern wellbeing offer. The works at Peterlee will ensure the pool is up to date while also being more energy efficient and sustainable for the future.

"Reopening the pool also marks the completion of our transformation programme at the centre, which now offers new and enhanced facilities. The programme aims to provide a diverse leisure offer for our communities across the county to help more people become and stay active, supporting our residents to live long and independent lives."

New soft play and ten-pin bowling area

Maintenance of the swimming pool is the final part of transformation works at Peterlee Leisure Centre and follows the refurbishment of the gym area, which reopened last year and features the latest Technogym equipment designed to enhance member experience.

A new children's soft play adventure area was also introduced alongside the new ten-pin bowling area and bar, which can be used by those with and without memberships, and a new café facility where customers can enjoy healthy options, drinks, and snacks.

Aqualearn lessons will recommence at the pool from Monday (29 April) and customers are being informed of these arrangements.

Louisa Centre pool to close for refurbishment

As part of the next stage of our Leisure Transformation Programme for the county, the swimming pool at The Louisa Centre in Stanley will temporarily close from Monday (29 April).

The closure will be to allow existing facilities to be updated, including works in the pool plant room, to lower emissions and improve the sustainability of the building.

Alternative arrangements are being made for members during the closure of the pool, which is due to reopen in the summer.
