Sniperley to County Hall footpath and active travel route improvements
Work to improve the footpaths and active travel routes between Sniperley and County Hall (A691 Southfield Way and B6532) started on 20 May 24.
The work will:
- improve active travel routes
- link key employment sites and residential areas
- provide an alternative travel option in and out of the city
- upgrade the crossing points between County Hall and the hospital on the B6532
- improve street lighting in the area
The work will be done in phases to reduce the effect on motorists, but delays are expected on some routes while the work happens.
First phase
The work started on the A691 Southfield Way from the County Hall roundabout to the mini-roundabout leading to the hospital and Land Registry car parks is now nearly finished.
Second phase
The next phase of work will start on Monday 22 July. Construction will move north to the footpath at the roundabout between the Land Registry and University Hospital of North Durham, heading out of the city towards Sniperley roundabout. It is expected that this phase will take to eight weeks to complete.
Due to the nature of the works, and for safety reasons, lane closures around Sniperley roundabout will be required. To minimise the effect on motorists, this work has been planned to be done during the school summer holidays. Sniperley roundabout will be affected for up to four weeks and work will occur for extended hours for six days a week to get it done as quickly as possible.
Third Phase
The third phase of cycle/ped route improvement work will start on 14 October 2024 on the B6532.
Work will start from County Hall entrance on B6532 and move towards Aykley Heads roundabout. Bus lane heading towards Durham city will be closed along with bus stop suspension and footpath closure to facilitate the construction work. Public footpath connection B6532 and former register office will be closed from early December 24 as this is part of cycle/ped route improvement works.
Next phases
The rest of the work programme is being developed and will be made available as soon as possible. We recommend that if you are driving into the city during the work you allow extra time for your journey.
