New Mayor appointed for Durham

Cllr Liz Brown begins her term as Mayor of Durham for 2024/25, having served as a local councillor since 2017 and as a parish councillor since 2018.

For her chosen charities, Cllr Brown will be raising money for Feeding Families, which offers support to people experiencing food poverty, and animal rescue charity Stray Aid.

Cllr Brown said: "I am incredibly honoured and excited to begin my term as Mayor of Durham. As someone born and bred here, I am looking forward to the opportunity of being a representative for Durham and celebrating the communities and organisations that make this wonderful city what it is.

"I have chosen two charities whose causes are important to me. In a time where there is a higher cost of living, the work of Feeding Families is incredibly important. I am also supporting Stray Aid, which dedicates itself to providing care for stray animals. I shall be using my term of office to boost the profile of both charities and of course raise money to allow them to carry on their vital work."

Personal life

Born in Durham City, Cllr Brown has had a long and varied working career ranging from cleaning houses, garden design, and booking bands for universities, to working for the BBC.

She is the mother to four children who have all become involved in local causes after seeing her close links to the community.

Cllr Brown will be supported in her civic duties by her husband, Jonathan Brown, to whom she has been married for 33 years.
