Dads Welcome Here is part of our work to recognise dads and the important role they play in our families. It is one of the various new ways we are supporting and encouraging dads as a council. This pilot project is creating a "kitemark" that will show which places and businesses in County Durham are actively supporting and promoting dads and male carers.

Purpose of the kitemark

We are asking companies, charities, organisations, and groups to show dads that they are welcome in their venues by displaying the new kitemark. This shows that the organisation has done things to make sure dads are not only accepted, but they are actively encouraged to be there and are welcomed.

Benefits of the kitemark

Dads Welcome Here is beneficial for both dads and the organisations that earn it.

For dads and male carers

  • Dads will know that in these organisations, they are equal parents and should feel more accepted. This can increase their confidence and make them want to get involved in more activities both with their kids or with other dads.
  • These organisations will have the right resources and facilities that make taking kids on outings easier and more fun - and they'll be as easy for dads to use as they are for mams.
  • If organisations are running event focused on dads that helps them feel connected to each another and can help form friendships and support systems.

For organisations

  • Customer loyalty: Organisations that get the kitemark have the potential to draw in a loyal client base of males who value and actively seek out inclusive settings.
  • Positive publicity: By displaying the kitemark, an organisation is demonstrating their dedication to gender equality and family dynamics.
  • Social impact: When dads get more involved with family life, we see their children do better in life. So organisations that encourage and help dads to be involved also benefit families and communities.

How to become a Dads Welcome Here organisation

To get the Dads Welcome Here kitemark you must promise to show your dedication to dads through your actions. Some examples of things you can consider are:

  1. Facilities: Having things like baby-changing tables in men's toilets or "parent and child" toilets will make it easier and less stressful for dads to take care of their young children's needs.
  2. Staff Education: Public-facing staff should have the knowledge and ability to talk to dads in a constructive and welcoming manner and internal staff like managers and HR teams should acknowledge the range of roles that dads and other male carers have and provide support for them to do this.
  3. Events: Providing dad-and-baby events like playgroups or parenting workshops or fun-sessions for dads and their kids shows a strong commitment to inclusivity. Hosting events aimed at dads and male carers, like sports events or support groups is also a strong way to show your commitment to dads.
  4. Marketing and Communication: Think about including images of dads in a parenting role in your marketing materials - this helps make it clear that dads are welcome.
