Louisa Centre reopens with new facilities
A leisure centre in County Durham is reopening to the public after refurbishment works.
We have reopened the pool at The Louisa Centre today, Monday 8 July, with the rest of the centre to follow from Monday 22 July.
New facilities
We have been carrying out refurbishment works to regenerate areas of the centre to offer new and improved facilities, which include:
- A larger children's soft play area with interactive play features
- Three new group exercise and virtual studios
- A new Move Hub with the latest power-assisted equipment to help those who need support to get moving or those recovering from an illness
- Thrive Kitchen: A new café facility offering healthy food, drinks, and snacks
The new activity programme at the centre will begin from 22 July. Customers can find out more information by downloading the Thrive Active app, or visiting the Thrive Leisure website.
Pool improvements
Essential maintenance works were carried out at the centre's pool, mainly within the plant room, which will lower the emissions and improve the sustainability of the building.
Cllr James Rowlandson, our Cabinet member for resources, investment and assets, said: "We are delighted to announce that The Louisa Centre will begin reopening from next week with new and updated facilities for visitors to enjoy. The works in Stanley are part of our Leisure Transformation Programme through which we are currently updating our leisure offer to modernise it and ensure it is accessible for all ages and abilities.
"The programme aims to provide a diverse leisure offer for our communities across the county to help more people become and stay active, supporting our residents to live long and independent lives. We are looking forward to welcoming people back next week to see the improved offer at The Louisa Centre."
Climbing wall and obstacle course
In addition to the refurbishments, half of the sports hall is currently being transformed to include the first TAG Active obstacle course in the county as well as a new 'clip and climb' climbing wall. Opening arrangements for these new facilities will be announced soon.
Aqualearn lessons will start again at the pool from today.
