A County Durham school has celebrated 20 years of delivering a specialised support service to help its pupils who have motor and developmental disorders.
Villa Real School celebrations
Villa Real School, in Consett, has been delivering Conductive Education as part of its curriculum for the last two decades.
Therapeutic education
Conductive Education is a holistic and therapeutic education model for children and adults with motor difficulties. It aims to help students overcome barriers related to their condition through learning activities which teach them to problem solve.
It breaks down daily routines into a consistent sequence of actions that eventually become habit-forming, helping children and adults develop an active approach to life and daily challenges - from walking, dressing, eating and personal hygiene to communicating, exploring the environment and engaging with activities and resources.
Celebrating with families
As the only maintained school in the North East to deliver Conductive Education, Villa Real School held an event with pupils, families and staff both past and present to celebrate its 20th anniversary of delivering the curriculum.
Jill Bowe, head teacher at Villa Real School, said: "As a Special Educational Needs school, we are proud to do everything we can to support our pupils in their learning. Conductive Education is integrated into our educational offer, which allows families to access this sought-after intervention without the additional burden of costs and time out of school.
"Over the last two decades, we have been able to help many of our pupils become adaptable, confident problem-solvers through delivering Conductive Education. It was amazing to celebrate with past pupils and families and see how this learning has a positive role in their growth and development."
