Permitted types of employment for 13-year-olds


Children aged 13 can only be employed in light work in a limited number of areas.

These are:

  • agricultural or horticultural work
  • delivery of newspapers, journals and other printed material
  • shop work, including shelf stacking
  • domestic work in hotels or other establishments that offer accommodation
  • office work
  • car washing by hand in a private residential setting

Or in the following locations:

  • hairdressing salons
  • cafes and restaurants
  • riding stables

Light work is defined as work which is not harmful to the child's safety, health or development and will not adversely affect the child's attendance at school.
