Environment, Health and Consumer Protection (EHCP) enforcement policy

Background

Gov.uk: Regulators' Code was introduced in the Legislative and Regulatory Reform Act 2006 and applies to the legal roles of our Environmental Health, Trading Standards and Licensing services. It means we must have systems in place to allow regulators to offer their views and contribute to the development of the policies and service standards.

These legal roles potentially affect a wide range of businesses including:

• high street retailers
• manufacturers and processors
• food businesses
• the taxi trade
• market traders
• premises licensed to sell alcohol
• residential landlords and housing associations
• service industries
• farmers and livestock management
• animal welfare premises (where a licence to operate is required)
• petrol filling stations
• specified industrial installations
• social welfare providers (residential/nursing care)
• consumer services
• leisure services
• voluntary organisations/charities

Which services are covered

• health protection (food safety and standards, occupational safety and health, private water supplies, infectious disease control and animal health and welfare)
• Environmental protection (pollution control, contaminated land, private sector housing enforcement and public health issues)
• consumer protection (fair trading and consumer protection, product safety and metrology, licensing and markets)
