A sunken road
In July 1943 three DLI battalions took part in the invasion of Sicily fighting a bitter battle with German paratroops at Primosole Bridge, before returning to Britain to train for D-Day. Durham soldiers landed at Salerno near Naples in September 1943 and then fought northwards up the Italian peninsula, where the fighting was made worse by the severe winter storms and snow.
