By working together and sharing our different knowledge, skills, and experiences, we can help people to thrive and lead happy, healthy, and connected lives.

Who can become a Community Champion

If you are over 18, live in County Durham and are willing to share public health information with your friends, family, people you know or your community, then you could become a Community Champion.

We are a group of local people from across County Durham who care about health and wellbeing. You don't need to have any experience or know about health already, just an interest in knowing more and a willingness to share what you learn.

What it involves

Emails: After signing up, we will send you about two emails per week containing the latest information from public health, local services, campaigns, and health tips.

Share: You share the information in whatever way suits you. Whether it's on social media, talking to your friends and family, putting up posters or giving updates at other meetings and groups you attend - it's up to you!

Meetings: You will be invited to regular meetings and talks. We will let you know when they are on, if they are online or face to face and what they are about, but these are optional; it's up to you how much you want join in.

Training: There will be free training offered to you. This could be online or face to face. As with the meetings, training is optional, and you can pick and choose what you are interested in. Some essential training may be required if you want to participate in volunteering opportunities.

Volunteer: Every now and then we (or our partners) need volunteers to help with things like giving out leaflets, supporting vaccine pop up clinics or helping at community events. We will let you know when these opportunities come up. If you are interested, you might need a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and role specific training.

Tell us what you think: We don't just want to tell you things; we want you to tell us things too. We want to know what's working well in your area and what isn't, what questions people are asking and what people think we can do better. We will do this by sending you surveys and consultations and asking for feedback, or you can get in touch.

What's in it for you and your community

As a Community Champion you will:

  • be one of the first to know about important health campaigns and you will get all the latest information
  • get resources such as posters and social media graphics to use so you don't have to make your own
  • meet like-minded people and make new connections and friends
  • learn more about staying healthy and pick up new skills
  • help to get the voice of your community into strategic developments across the council and health partners

Community Champions are trusted voices within the community who can help get information to people who wouldn't normally access it. By sharing information, you are helping us reach lots more people across the county.

By keeping your community informed, you are helping people make informed choices that could support them to stay healthy and safe.
