Additional funding from government for local roads maintenance

The Prime Minister's Network North announcement on 4 October 2023 included a commitment to an additional £8.3 billion for local road maintenance from 2023/24 to 2033/34.

At the end of November 2023, we received an additional £3,722,000 of funding to be allocated within the 2023/24 and 2024/25 financial years from the Road Resurfacing Fund for local road maintenance, particularly for the resurfacing of roads, cycleways, and footpaths to prevent potholes thereby increasing the resilience of the road network.

Taking into consideration the specific needs of Durham's network and implementing good asset management principles of undertaking "the right treatment at the right time", we made the decision to allocate almost 100% of the additional funding to 2024/25 financial year. This will enable all work is planned to ensure:

  • minimal disruption to the road network
  • reduced negative impact on the travelling public
  • most efficient and appropriate use of the budget allocation
  • improved condition of the road network
  • life cycle planning

The additional funding has been allocated to various surfacing treatments:

  • road inlays
  • road overlays
  • surface dressing
  • micro asphalt
  • structural patching
